About the brand

Meryl J. Fernando devoted her life to tea when she witnessed the industry heading towards becoming a commodity in the 1950s. He decided that for the sake of tea drinkers and the culture his country produced with so much care, he would fight it. It took him almost four decades and in 1985 he launched his own brand Dilma in Sri Lanka. It was the first producer-owned tea brand to offer tea that was hand-picked and packaged at the point of origin (where it was grown), guaranteeing excellent taste and natural flavour qualities, making it one of the world's finest teas.

Dilma's philosophy - business is about human service - is what makes the brand the first ethically sourced tea. Dilma is a unique brand founded on a passionate commitment to quality and authenticity in tea, it is also part of a philosophy that goes beyond commerce, seeing business as a matter of human service. In 2005, Merrill and his sons Dilhan and Malik committed to following the principles dictated by the 12 Dilma Principles in every aspect of their business and in the conduct of their employees, staff and management.
